Moved to Tancook Island, Nova Scotia sometime before 1817. His son Jacob was born there April 11,1817. At some point he moved his family to Shelburne County and bought property on Sable River from Irishman, Mr. John Conley who was the first recorded settler in the Sable River area. According to records in the Public Archives of Nova Scotia in "Loyalists and Land Settlements" about 90 heads of families had moved to Shelburne County by way of Land Grants offered in the late 1700's. These grants were often offered to disbanded soldiers. This could be the way Mr. Conley obtained his property and the bachelor moved to Shelburne after the transaction. Ambrose Allen was known to have a great deal of money including bags of gold coins. When he died the money was missing and the mystery was never solved.
He built a shipyard on the shores of Sable River. The first schooner was launched from there on September 25, 1828 and taken to Liverpool for final finishing. There is legend that schooners were being built for rum running from the West Indies to Nova Scotia. Ambrose Allen is also credited with bringing the first cart wheels to Sable River.
