Amey was the ninth of twelve children born to Colonel Joseph Whipple and Alice Smith of Providence. She was married first on 20 December 1715 to John Crawford, the son of Gideon Crawford and Freelove Fenner. Following Crawford's death, she was married on 26 June 1723 to Robert Gibbs, the son of Robert Gibbs and Mary Shrimpton. Amey had two children with her first husband and an additional six children with her second husband.
