About Amos Hurff Allen
Amos left school in 1900, he was12 years old and finished 8th grade. He left with 2 of his brothers to join the land rush in South Dekota. He built a sod house. I have a picture of it and farmed the land. Before he left he gave Beatrice a penny and a note. She would have been 10 and they wrote to each other while he was there. He returned several years later after working on the Corn Palace. Now the story gets really interesting, one story is Beatrice married him and refused to go west, The other story is she went west and lived through a winter and hated it. Told him she was coming home to Jersey. They lived 15 miles from the nearest neighbor, the winter was terrible and the winds howled. She told me some of the women went crazy from the howling winds. Which ever story is true, He built home in Gibbstown. He also bought a grocey store and became a lincensed butcher. Cuttin off three fingers of his left hand doing so. He also bought and managed a couple of gas stations. He had a large farm which he farmed and eventually became a lincensed carpenter. He also became a home builder and sold some of his farm and built houses on it. Eventually he built his own home and Geraldine's home. He also worked for Mobil Oil company.
He was the brightest man I ever knew. He was a Democrate but voted against Social Security. He held office int the county.
He owned a home in townsend Inlet.
Amos was one of 10 and his Father was one of 12. He went West with a few brothers. some stayed.
