GEDCOM Note

He was born on the farm identified as #S1 near the village of Ingesarven. The farm was owned by his mother's parents and his father worked there as a farmhand. .

Ingesarven was a small village of population 78 and was composed of just a few farmsWhen Anders was born, the King of Sweden and Norway was Karl Johan; before taking that name he was Marshal Bernadotte, a famous general in the French army under Napoleon. Bernadotte and his wife Desiree were invited to become the King and Queen of Sweden when the Swedish Royal family died out.

The patronymic naming system was used for hundreds of years in Sweden. It is a system where, for example, all boy children of a father named Nils had Nilsson as their last name and all his girls had Nilsdotter as their last name. The system also provided for first names based on grandparent's names. This system was used until well into the 19th century, and it results in many people with the same names. Most farm land was part of a landowner's large estate which was passed down to the eldest son of the landowner and stayed in that family for many generations. As a result few working people and farmers owned their own land. Such estates had a "main house" that was known by a farm name. An estate employed many working people; some lived on or close to the main farm or in nearly villages.

The farm name or village name where a person lived was then commonly used to solve the confusion by appending it as sort of a last name for all of the people who lived and worked on that farm. Hence, for example, a boy named Jonas Nilsson could become known as Jonas Nilsson Högen. The confusion of names when young men went into (mandatory) military service caused assignment of last names using the farm name, village name, geographic place (e.g. Holm meaning island) or by an occupation or skill (e.g. Svard means sword). The last name Hedberg is composed of Hed-(heath or moor) and -berg (mountain or hill) and was first used by Nicholas's father Anders Nilsson about 1844 - presumably when he was in military service (yet to be researched).

Up to 1834 Anders and his parents lived on his grandmothers farm; in 1834 she died and Brita's older sister Carin and her husband Per Andersson Dahl took over the farm (eventually her brother Jonas lived there). Anders was 11 when the family moved to farm #4. In 1841, when Anders was 17, he left Bergsjö to go to the town of Hudiksvall (about 25 miles away). In 1843, he returned home again from Hudiksvall. He probably was in the military there or learning a trade. In any case he had added the name Hedberg by 1844; the records of 1846 list him as Anders Nilsson Hedberg.

GEDCOM Note

The cause of his death was "brain fever" which we now know as meningitis (bacterial) or encephalitis (usually viral). Average life expectancy in Sweden for males born ca. 1825 was 40 years. for women it was 44 years.
