About Andre Jaillet
Andre was probably born in Vallorbe, Switzerland the ancestral home of the Jaillet's for several hundred years. When he was recruited by an agent of Britain to settle in the British colony of Nova Scotia he was a citizen and resident of Hericourt in the Principality of Montbeliard. Andre and his family sailed from Rotterdam, Holland on May 30, 1752, on the ship Sally and arrived in Halifax on August 26, 1752 after a voyage of 88 days. Because of the change of calendars during this period the date of arrival is usually recorded as September 6, 1752. The passengers were not allowed to land until September 26th because of 14 'ly-days' and 7 days demurrage. The Sally had a long and stormy passage, and an illness of some kind or kinds killed 39 people including the ship's Master, John Robinson. When they departed Rotterdam, Andre's party consisted of himself, his wife Maria Magdalana, their two children under four years of age and Maria's brothers Pierre Heinrich Megreswho was over 14 years of age and Jean Casper Megres who was between 4 and 14 years old. The two Jaillet children died during the voyage. Andre was a French speaking Protestant[Huguenot] who settled in Lunenburg and learned to speak English. The English liked to Anglicise the French names and thus Jaillet's were often called Sawyer[Shawyer] after the occupation of the same name. Andre's first wife Maria died in October, 1752. In 1760, Andre owned town lots F8, F9 and F10 in Creightons Division. In 1753 he received farm lot B9 and in 1760 farm lot B8.
