Verrocchio was born in Florence in around 1435. His father, Michele di Francesco Cioni, initially worked as a tile and brick maker, then later as a tax collector. Verrocchio never married, and had to provide financial support for some members of his family.
ANDREA di Michele , known as Verrocchio. - He was born in Florence in 1436, from the kilnsman Michele di Francesco Cioni and his first wife Gemma, and took the name by which he is best known from his first master, the goldsmith Giuliano del Verrocchio.
It appears mentioned for the first time in 1452, when he is found innocent on the accusation of having killed a fourteen-year-old boy, a certain Antonio di Domenico, with a stone. His first declaration to the land registry dates from 1456. Then, in 1461, in competition with Desiderio da Settignano and Giuliano da Maiano, he presented the project for a chapel in the cathedral of Orvieto (a work which, however, was later carried out by Giovanni da Meaccio).
