Andreas (Andrew) Halvorson

"My grandfather on my mother's side, Andrew Halvorson, was born in Telemarken, Norway, a beautiful mountain district in which was one of the most magnificent waterfalls in the country. A great electric power plant has been constructed in this place, making use of the waterfall for power. My grandfather came to America when yet a young man and settled near Black River Falls, Wisconsin. Here he met my grandmother, Oline Gilbertson, who also as a child had come with her mother from Valders [Valdres, Oppland], Norway. They were married and, after living a short time in Wisconsin, moved to Nicollet County, Minnesota. Their children were 5 daughters and 2 sons, my mother, Olivia, being the youngest daughter.

"My grandfather was called to serve in the Civil War but on account of his being the only support of his family of young children, he was obliged to pay someone else to serve in his place. They had terrible experiences with the Indians at the time of the outbreak in the 1860s. Later, my grandfather and his family moved north to Crookston, Minnesota, where he operated a hotel for many years. It was here that my mother, having the position of assistant postmistress, met and married my father [William Jason Marles], who was then a railway mail clerk, and he later became Post Office Inspector in Charge of the Midwest Division, with headquarters in Chicago, Illinios."
