According to the genealogy of his wife Hugues Busac compiled, he was the brother of George Palaiologos Kantakouzenos, and with George possibly son of Demetrios I Kantakouzenos or his brother Theodore Kantakouzenos. He was married and had at least one son who married the daughter of the megas doux Loukas Notaras. Doukas tells how the younger Kantakouzenos was accompanied by his father-in-law to their execution.

4. ANDRONIKOS Palaiologos Kantakouzenos (-murdered Constantinople 3 Jun 1453). The Masarelli Vatican manuscript names (in order) Demetrios, Manuel, Giorgios, Andronikos, Thomas, as the sons of Theodoros & his wife[641]. Megas domestikos.

m ---, sister of --- Protobestiarios of Trebizond [Giorgios Amiroutzes?]. The Masarelli Vatican manuscript records that Andronikos, son of Theodoros, married a sister of Provestiar of Trebizond and that the couple had sons who were killed by the Turks[642].
