About Ann Dawson
She lived with the family at least through 1881 census at 21 Duncan Street in Ashton under Lyne. She lived on Grosvenor Street 2 miles away across the Thames, in Ashton Under Lyne when she died.
The back of the photo says: "Grandma Newton (Grandpa Joseph Dawson's grandmother taken in England about 1864)" Written by Dorothy Gibbs (Dawson). Joseph Dawson's death certificate lists his mother as Mary Newton while his marriage certificate lists his mother as Mary Deardon. Mary is Sarah Deardon's daughter. Perhaps the scribe misheard Deardon as Newton as Joseph is buried in Newton Cemetery. Dorothy may have gotten the name Newton from the death certificate. She is listed as a spinster living in Charlestown on her daughter Mary's baptismal record. The father is not listed.
Equally or more likely possible is that the photo is of Grandma Ann Dawson (Brown), Joseph's grandmother on his father's side. She lived with Joseph and his parents until her death.
