Ann (Miller) Skelton / Skelhorn - Gangell, Free Settler "Calcutta" 1803

Ann Gangell (Skelhorn nee Miller) was born in England and was marrid on 28 Mary 1798 at St. Brides Church, Fleet Street, London to John Caryer Skelton (spelt Skelhorn in Tasmania). She accompanied her husband, a Royal Marine, on the voyage to Port Phillip Bay, a sea voyage lasting six months. Her husband John passed away prior to the landing at Sullivan Bay in Port Phillip Bay (now known as Sorrento, Victoria) and he was buried at sea. A young Royal Marine was assigned to take care of her. A relationship ensued and 4 months later 16 days after arrival at the new settlement in Van Diemen's Land they were married at the settlement. The wedding was witnessed by Liet. Governor Collins. Their marriage was the first marriage to take place at the new settlement, and later described as the first marriage in Tasmania.

Ann had 5 children, William Henry 1806, John James Eli 1807, Dorothy Elizabeth 1810, Hannah Grace 1812 and Sarah Ruth 1815.

Ann died in Hobart on 2 January 1817.
