Samuel Myles

Clergyman, was born in Boston, Mass., in 1664; son of John and Ann (Humfrey) Myles. (SIC: may not be correct parents)  His (grand)father, a Baptist minister, came from Swansee, Wales; became pastor in Rehoboth, Mass., in 1663, and died Feb. 3, 1683.  Samuel graduated from Harvard, A.B., 1684, A.M., 1687, and taught school in Charlestown, Mass., 168-87.  He visited England, and there is presumed to have received ordination to the Anglican ministry.  He was the first rector of King’s chapel, Boston, 1689-92; was in England, 1693-96, where he received grants of communion plate from Queen Anne, and also the royal bounty, and an annuity of L100 for the support of an assistant minister for King’s chapel. He returned in 1696 with the Rev. Joseph Dansey, who was to be his assistant, but who died on the voyage, and in 1698 he married Ann, the widow of his deceased assistant.  She died on March 17, 1728. He laid the corner stone of Christ church, Boston, in 1723, of which church the Rev. Dr. Timothy Cutler was the first rector.  He retired as rector of King’s chapel on account of ill health, in 1727.   He received the degree of A.M. from Oxford in 1693.  He died in Boston, Mass., March 4, 1728. William Price, the associate publisher, apparently came from England in the early part of the eighteenth century ... Warden in 1731, and Senior Warden from 1732 to 1734. On September 18, 1727, he signified his intention to marry Sarah Myles, niece of the Rev. Samuel Myles, Rector of King's Chapel, and was married December 20, 1727. He was chosen constable in 1728 and 1729, but was excused as a "Trooper."

On Dr. Myles's death, with the widow Ann Myles and Thomas Creese, his brother-in-law, as executors, he [sold the mansion house on Tremont Street (opposite King's Chapel) to George Craddock, October 4, 1728. He was among the subscribers to Prince's Chronology. In 1730, he was again to the front in the subscription for Trinity Church, and on its erection in 1735 it was deeded to him and three others until such time as the money "advanced is reimbursed," and they in 1739 deeded it back to the Wardens. On August 30, 1731, he (or rather his wife) received £449.13.2 as heir of the Rev. Samuel Myles and £224.16.7 as guardian of John Myles's children.
