Ann Waldron

About 1719 Rev Henry Rust married into one of the prominent families of the state. His wife who was Ann Waldron, daughter of Colonel and Judge Richard Waldron and his second wife, Eleanor (Vaughn) Waldron, of Portsmouth, was born 27 Aug 1698. She seems to have been held in more than usual esteem by her friends, or elsecommiseration was excitedby her early death at the age of thirty-five, after borne seven children. Her tombstone in the old Stratham Cemetery is conspicuosu for it's size and solidity, for its consists of a solid block of masonary, six feet long, two feet wide and three feet high. Upon the top of this pile rests a slab, bearing the the following quaint inscription: "Interned here lyes Mrs. Anna Rust, the Desirable Consort of the Rev.Henry Rust, Obit May 20, 1733 Aetat 35. Omnia Pensabunt Nobis Caelestia Sceptra. A gift of the Neighboring Women" The last line, which shows that the imposing memorial was provided, not by Mrs Rust's own family, who were people of wealth and dignity, but by neighboring wives and mothers, whose means was probably limited, indicates the love that the parishioners bore to their pastor's wife. Literal translation of the inscription: Heavenly Scripture will make good to us everything. A more free interpitation: He who controls the affairs of heaven will fully compensate us for our loss, i.e. God will make good to us everything.
