About Ann Vail

Ann and Jeremiah had no children together.

From Moores of Southold:

"BENJAMIN MOORE-203 son of Thomas-1 & Martha (Youngs) Moore, was born Aug 2 1640 (bp then?-M9) Salem, died ca May 16 1690; he married Ann Hampton daughter of James Hampton of Salem; issue:

  1. Benjamin-307 b 1678 d Jan 26 1728 m Abigail
  2. Abigail-308
  3. Joseph-309 b 1676 d 1745 m Martha ---

There were possibly other children, for the 1686 Southold census gives him five males and three females, totaling eight in the family. He was known as Captain Benjamin. He died intestate, and letters of administration were issued Sep 8 1691. He is included in the Southold rate lists for £80 10s in 1683 and £118 in 1685. In Jan 1680 his father deed over to him two acres of Land, Calves Neck (M3)."

From East Hampton pg 597:(condensed from the Vail Genealogy of Louis Tooker Vail)

“Jeremiah 2 b. 1649 d. 1726 m. 1st 1668/9, Mary Moore, dau. Thomas and Martha Youngs Moore (the latter sister of the Rev. John Youngs); he m. 2nd Mrs. Ann Hampton Moore, Dau James and Jane Hampton of Southampton, L.I., formerly of Salem, and widow of Benjamin Moore of Southold.”

It seems clear that Jeremiah Vail(-1102) had two wives. The second was Ann(Hampton-14) Moore, widow of Benjamin Moore. They married c. 1690. She outlived Jeremiah by only a month and died in Southold NY in 1726. Her maiden name was probably Hampton. Her parents may have been James and Jane Hampton from Salem MA. Jeremiah’s first wife, mother of his children, shows up as 1) unknown; 2) Ann Moore Hampton; or 3) Mary, possibly Moore. They married c. 1667. She died in Southold, c. 1689. Mary Moore was the sister of Benjamin Moore , the first husband of Jeremiah's second wife Ann Hampton Moore. The Moores and Vails were neighbors and they seem to have have intermarried repeatedly.

Jeremiah was born in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts. On 30 December 1649, he was christened in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, at the First Church. Jeremiah married Anna (?). Anna's maiden name may have been Moore. 1698, Jeremiah and Anna and his wife, [ROF:Southold Town] werelisted on the Southold Town Census. Enumerated in this household were Jeremiah Vealel, Anne, Thomas, Jeremiah Junjr.,& Mary.7 Jeremiah made his will on 2 January 1723 at the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. He mentions his wife, Anna and his children: Jeremiah, Thomas, Mary Goldsmith, Martha Horton. [New York Wills: Liber 10, page 38] Jeremiah departed this life on Thursday, 28 November 1726 in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. His gravestone reads: "Here Lyes ye Body of Mr. Jeremiah Vail Aged 77 years Decd Novr ye 28th 1726". His burial was near Orient. His will was probated on 31 January 1727.
