About Anna Elizabeth Ermentraudt

Anna's husband probably died in Germany, because Peter HAIN, Elizabeth's brother returned to Europe and escorted her and her family on the ship Samuel to America..

Anna landed in Delaware Bay on August 27, 1739 on the English ship, Samuel.

There were 340 passengers on board, mostly Palatine Germans. The ship's passenger list included Johannes Ermantroudt, age 22, Philipus Ermantroudt, age 18, and Johan Frederick Ermentroudt, age 16. They unloaded in Philadelphia. She lived at first on a farm with her brother George HAIN, 7 miles NW of Reading PA. She bought 500 acres in Lancaster (now Berks Countyy about 2 miles N. of the intersection of Berks and Dauphin Turnpike (US422) in present-day Wernersville PA and the Hains Church Road, 1 mile N. of Hains Church.

Anna's brother, George HAIN and possibly Peter his brother, had come to America with the English project for settling German Protestants from the refugee camps around London, in the New York Colony at a site along the Hudson River called Scoharie, where they went to work for the English Navy in the production of Naval stores. Many of this group of immigrants became dissatisfied with broken promises and the English treatment of the colonists, left the project, and traveled overland through the Delaware Water Gap to the Tolpehocken Creek Area of the present-day Berkes County, PA, in the winter of 1723.

Landed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Aug 27, 1739, with her six sons and one daughter aboard the sailing ship "Samuel." Her brother Peter Hain returned to Europe to accompany her to America. Moved to Virginia in 1752, where she later died. There were a total of 340 passengers aboard on this trip, including men, women and children. However, only the names of the male passengers age 16 and older appear on the passenter lists. Sixteen was still the minimum age for military service, so all males 16 years of age and older were required to sign the Oath of Allegiance to the English Crown and the Oath of Abjuration by which they denied support for any of the several pretenders to the English Throne. All this was accomplished in the Court House in Philadelphia before the Justices of the Royal Court.

The following are excerpts from the ship's passenger list prepared by Capt. Hugh Percy of the SAMUEL and the list of signatures prepared by the clerk of the court to indicate that they had complied with the law by taking the prescribed oath. "A list of passengers' names and ages on board the ship SAMUEL Hugh Percy, Commander, from Rotterdam, Aug. 27, 1739."

The Ermentraudts were Palatinates and Protestants of the Reformation Faith and what the motivation was for this family to immigrate to the New World is not known. It is possible that the continual warfare and religious troubles in the Rhine Valley played a very compelling role in their decision to leave their homeland. They may also have been influenced by Penn's Agents in Central Europe soliciting immigrants for settlement in Pennsylvania. These agents, together with the other pressures on the Rhine Valley population, started a migration from the German states that lasted for nearly a hundred years and saw over 30,000 Germans move to America and settle primarily in Pennsylvania. The descendants of these immigrants are the people we know today as Pennsylvania Dutch. The Ermentraudts came in the early days of this movement.

Anna was a Palatine Migrant.
