About Anna Francis (Madiekulla) Hogan
Madiekulla is not an English or Dutch name.
Madiekulla is best guessed to be the daughter of an English merchant in India and an Anglo-Indian mother. Thus, Mediekulla would be a quarter North Indian. DNA tests of descendants of Annie Hogan show no sign of Malay ancestry at this generation, only North Indian bloodlines that appears to trace to Madiekulla's grandmother as a North Indian woman.
One source lists two wives. 1. Anna Francis (born Francis) and 2. Madiekulla Hogan. This could be two different women or more likely just two names for the same woman. Her everyday name or her native name, and her Christian name when she was baptised perhaps as an adult upon marriage to Hogan.
Could Madiekulla be a local native of India or Sumatra where John Hogan worked for the British East India Company? Or Singapore, as her husband John Hogan was one of the three white men who accompanied Sir Raffles to found the port of Singapore. She was known as Madiekulla. If so, perhaps 'Anne Francis' given to her as her Christian name when she married Hogan and was baptized.
Note from Kim: I have seen references to a Maddy Julia in relation to Madiekulla. She is also sometimes referred to as Anna Francis. The closest match I can find (unverified) is a Captain Michael Hogan, merchant sea captain with the British East India Company who married an Anglo-Indian lady called Anna who was the illegitimate daughter of an English merchant (William Richardson) living in India and his Anglo-Indian housekeeper Anna Lacy (with whom I believe he had a second family). Records are sketchy with regards to their children. There is a john Hogan born the same year as Madiekulla’s husband John. However, there is no reference as to what happened to him. There is a reference in an article about Michael Hogan suggesting that Michael’s son John may have died in infancy however it also notes that this is not verified. There is good record of Michael moving to New York with his other children, but nothing more of John. This has been the closest link I have found to the elusive John Hogan. John does look like he could be of mixed heritage. It is interesting that his wife took on the names Anna and Frances.
