About Anna Miriah Sprague

Anna Maria Leavitt was born March 1, 1861 in Santa Clara, Washington County, Utah, to Dudley Leavitt and one of his four plural wives, Jeanette Smith Leavitt. In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census for Washington County, Utah, Anna is listed as Annie, 9, years old, and her mother, Jeanette, 24 years old, and father, Dudley, 39 years old. Dudley is working as a farmer and his real estate is valued at $1,250 and his personal estate at $1,200. Living with Annie and her mother are her siblings, Calvin, 7, (Sarah) Jane, 2, and Heleman, 4 months old. The other wives of Dudley and their children are listed as follows: Mary, 33, and her children, Laura, 15, Dudley, 13, Orin, 11, Orson, 9, Alonzo, 4, Samuel, 3, George E., 4 months. The next wife, Marie, was 29, and her children were Aurilla, 11, Eliza, 9, Hyrum, 7, John, 3, and Sarah, 1. The next wife, Thressa, 28, and her children, Ware, 11, Salena, 7, Mary E., 4, Christopher, 3, and Henry, 2 months old. How Dudley ever took care of all those wives and children is a miracle!

Anna Maria Leavitt married Ithamer Smith Sprague on May 21, 1880, in St. George, Washington County, Utah. By 1900, Ithamer and Annie were living in Bunkerville, Lincoln County, Nevada, with their children: Ithamer, 19, Oliver, 17, Orson M., 14, Milo, 12, and Harvey, 9. According to the census record, they had been married for 17 years and had 9 children, 5 of whom were still living. This census record indicates that Annie was born in March of 1863, not 1861. Ithamer was working as a farmer and his son Ithamer as a farm laborer. They owned their own farm free from a mortgage. Their children were born as follows: Ithamer, Jr., April, 1881, Oliver, November, 1882, Orson N., March, 1886, Milo, January, 1888, and Harvey, July 1890.

By 1910, the family is living in Mesquite, Clark County, Nevada, and Ithamer is 59, Annie, 48, and the children living with them were Orson M. 24, Milo, 22, Harvey, 19, Morley L., 7, and Vilate, 4. They had been married for 30 years and had 12 children, 7 of whom were still living. Ithamer was still farming on his own farm, and 3 of his sons were also farming, Orson, Milo and Harvey. Sadly, the next year, Anna Maria or Anna Miriah Leavitt Sprague passed away at age 50 on September 1, 1911 in Bunkerville, Clark County, Nevada.

In the 1920 U.S. Census for Overton, Clark County, Nevada, Ithamer is listed as a 68-year old widower, living with three of his children, Harvey, 32, Morley, 17, and Vilate, 14. Ithamer is still working on his own farm, and Harvey is a laborer/mill-hand. His son Oliver, 37, is living next door with his wife, Betsy L, 39, and children, Dee, 9, Jessie, 8, June, 5, Phil, 3, and Nina, 2. Oliver is also farming. Next door to Oliver is his older brother, Ithamer D. Sprague, Junior, 38, and his wife, Alice, 34, and their children, Mattie, 16, Gaylis, 15, Alta, 13, and Helen, 11.

Five years later, Ithamar Smith Sprague passed away on June 4, 1925, and is buried in Logandale, Clark County, Nevada. I find no record of Ithamar's only living daughter, Vilate, in the 1930 census, but in 1940, she is living in Mesquite, Clark County, Nevada, and is married to D. Ruben Leavitt, 37, Vilate is 34, and their children are Zella, 13, Eleanor, 11, Ella, 7, and Bertha Annie, 1 year old. Ruben is working as a shovel operator in the road construction industry. For the 39 weeks he worked in 1939 his income was $2,700. By 1957, Vilate and Ruben were living in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Reuben D. was working as a power shovel engineer for U.S. Lime and Cement. Their home was located at 1718 Princeton, in North Las Vegas.

Vilate Sprague Leavitt passed away on Halloween, 1984, and is buried in Bunkers Memory Gardens Cemetery in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is buried next to her husband Reuben Dudley Leavitt, who passed away on June 22, 1997, at the age of 94 years. He missed his 95th birthday bu just 2 months. Here is a Find A Grave.com memorial for their oldest daughter, Zella:
