Anne of Bohemia (1323–1338)

Anne of Bohemia also known as Anna of Luxembourg (1323–3 September 1338) was a daughter of John of Bohemia and his first wife, Elizabeth of Bohemia. Anne was a member of the House of Luxemburg.[1]

Anne was born 1323. At the time, her mother was living in exile in Bavaria, away from Bohemia. Anne had a twin sister, Elisabeth who was named after her mother but died aged only one. John sent his wife and new-born twin daughters money during their exile. Elisabeth returned to Bohemia in 1325. She was only joined by Anne; Elisabeth the younger had died the year before. Her mother was never in great health after they returned, but she lived for another five years. Elisabeth died in 1330, from Tuberculosis.

Anne was a younger sister of Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor, Bonne; first wife of John II of France, Margaret; wife of Henry XIV, Duke of Bavaria and John Henry, Margrave of Moravia.

After his Elisabeth's death, John remarried to Beatrice of Bourbon. John and Beatrice had two children, Wenceslaus I, Duke of Luxembourg and Bonne, who died young.

Anne was betrothed twice, before she married. Her first betrothal was to Ladislaus of Hungary, son of Charles I of Hungary and Elisabeth of Poland. The betrothal ended when Ladislaus died in 1329. If Ladislaus had survived and the pair were married, Anne could have become Queen of Hungary.

She was secondly betrothed to Louis VI the Roman. This betrothal ended because Louis' father, Louis IV, Holy Roman Emperor, could have been excommunicated by the Pope.

Anne was eventually married on 25 March 1330 Otto, Duke of Austria. This was a second marriage for Otto, his first wife, Elizabeth of Bavaria had died but had left him two sons.

The marriage, was good for John, it gave him a closer alliance with the emperor.

The marriage lasted for eight years. During this time, Anne was still a child and was too young to have children. Anne and Otto had no children, and Anna died aged fifteen. Her husband died months later and was succeeded by his sons from his first marriage to Elisabeth of Bavaria.[2][3]
