The Said Robert Patrick Bates was the child of William Bates born on 2 - Feb - 1737 at VA   died at Washington Co VA on 6 - May - 1811 and his ( 1st ) wife Annabel Alexander born on 23 - Apr - 1740 at Amelia Co VA died at White Co TN on 16 - Sep - 1825 married on 17 - Jul - 1763.

According to "The Lanphere and related families genealogy," as shown on Ancestry.com:

William Bates (Joseph, James, James, George John) was born February 2, 1737, in Wythe County, Virginia, and died May 6, 1811, in Washington County, Virginia. He married Anabel Alexander July 17, 1763. She was born April 23, 1740, in Amalia County, Virginia, and died September 16, 1825, in White County, Tennessee.

According to a certificate signed by Morgan P. Robinson, archivist, Virginia State Library, Richmond, Virginia, January 28, 1915, that Willliam Bates is recorded in manuscript Vol. "War 4, Page 100, in the list of soldiers of the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment, serving in the war of the American Revolution. Served under General Sevier in the Battle of Kings Mountain, North Carolina."

William Bates and Anabel Alexander Bates had the following children:

James Alexander Bates, born 1764, died 1814, married Mary Murphy 1786

Robert Patrick Bates, born 1766, married Jane Hill near Sparta, White County, Tennessee. They had a son, Finis Campbell Bates, and a grandnephew, William S. Bates.

Joseph Bates, born 1777, and died 1849, and lived in Middle, Tennessee

Henderson Wesley Bates, born 1779, died 1845, married Sarah Gentry 1810. They were the grandparents of William S. Bates of Houston, Mississippi.
