About Anne Aylesbury, Countess of Claredon

Anne was the sister to Sir Thomas Aylesbury, Master of Requests, thegreat grandfather of both Queen Mary II, wife of King William III; andQueen Anne, by the marriage of his daughter, Frances AylesburytoEdward Hyde. Edward served King Charles II in exile and became theEarl of Clarendon on the marriage of his daughter, Anne Hyde, toJames, Duke of York, brother and successor to King Charles II. As KingJames II he was supplanted by his daughter Mary and her husband,William in 1688-89. Anne Hyde was his first wife, the second beingMary of Modena by whom he had a son, James Stuart, the Old Pretender,whose son, Charles, was the Young Pretender.
