About Lady Anne Mohun

John Mohun, son of William and Isabel, married Anne daughter of Richard Coode of Morval. They both died of the sweating sickness in September 1508. In the church of Lanteglos there is a brass showing the effigies of John Mohun in armour, but without a helmet, Anne his wife, their five sons and their four daughters. It bears the following inscription:—

Hic jacent tumulata corpora Johannis Mohun armigeri et Anne uroris ejus filie Ricardi Code armigeri et qui quidem Johannes fuit filius et heres Willelmi Mohun armigeri ac Florencie uroris ejus unius sororum Edwardi Courtney Comitis Devonie et qui quidem Johannes et Anna obierunt mense Septembris infra viginti quatuor horas er infirmitate vocata Sudore, anno Domini mdviij, quorum animabus propitietur Deus.

'here lie buried the bodies of John Mohun, Esquire, and Anne, his wife, daughter of Richard Code, Esquire, and which same John was son and heir of William Mohun, Esquire, and Florence, his wife, one of the sisters of Edward Courtney, Earl of Devon, and which same John and Anne died in the month of September within twenty four hours from sweating sickness in the year of our Lord 1508, on whose souls may God have mercy'

The brass is not believed to be quite contemporary, and the name of John Mohun's mother is incorrectly given.

Of the nine children represented the names of six are known:—

  • John, who died on the 4th of January 1516, without issue.
  • Edmund, who died young.
  • Roger, who died young.
  • Reynold, heir to his brother John.
  • Isabel, who married in 1537 John Nicolls of Penvoyce.
  • Joan, who married John Rosuggan of Milledar.
