- (14) Sir Roger Wentworth, Kt., married, in June 1423, Margery, daughter and heir of Sir Philip le Despenser, Kt., of Nettlested, co. Suffolk, and relict of John, Lord de Roos (who died without issue, 22 March 1421-2). He settled at Nettlested, where he died 21 October 1452. She survived him, and died 20 April 1478. They had issue as follows: --

- (15) Henry Wentworth, of Codham Hall, in Wethersfield, co. Essex, married, first, Elizabeth, daughter and sole heir of Henry Howard, second son of Sir John Howard; and, secondly, Jane, daughter and heir of Henry Fitz Simon. She survived her husband and remarried Sir Richard Fitz Lewes, Kt., of West Horndon, do. Essex, whose Will she proved 24 November 1529. By his second wife Henry Wentworth had issue only one son, Nicholas, ancestor of the Wentworths of counties Oxford, Bucks, Northampton, Warwick, and Lincoln, of whom hereafter. The said Henry Wentworth died 22 March 1482-3, having had issue by his first wife as follows: --

- (16) Sir Roger Wentworth, Kt., of Codham Hall, was sheriff of the counties of Essex and Hertford in 1499. He died 9 August 1539, aged 74, and was buried at Gosfield, co. Essex. He married Anne, daughter and heir of Humphrey Tyrrell, Esq., of Little Warley, co. Essex, and heir also to her mother Isabel, daughter and heir of John Helion, Esq. She died 28 August 1534, and was buried at Gosfield. They had issue as follows: --
- (17) 1. Sir John Wentworth, Kt., of Bocking and Gosfield, co. Essex, who was born in 1494. He was buried at Gosfield 1 October 1567. He married, before 1525, Anne, daughter of John Bettenham, Esq., of Pluckley, co. Kent. She was buried at Gosfield 30 November 1575. They had issue, an only son John, who died young, and three daughters, viz. --
- 2. Henry, of whom hereafter.
- 3. Roger Wentworth, Esq., of Felsted and Bocking, co. Essex, who compounded to avoid knighthood in 1553-4. He died 24 February 1556-7 and was buried at Bocking. His first wife Mary according to his monument, was buried at Bocking. He married secondly, Alice Buckford, who was living, as appears by a deed, in 1540; and thirdly, Anne Isaac, a widow, who survived him, and died in 1561. By his second wife Alice he had a daughter Anne, who married, first Roger Parker, of Gosfield and secondly Richard Upcher; another daughter, who married __ Mannock; and an only son

- 4. John Wentworth, the younger (there being two brothers with the same Christian name, -- a practice not uncommon at this period), son of Sir Roger, of Bumpstead at the Tower, co. Essex. He died before 1566, and his wife Elizabeth in 1569. Their son
- 5. Lora, who married, first, Edward Shaw (or Shaa); secondly, __ Everard; and thirdley, Francis Clopton, of Kedington, co. Suffolk, Esq.
- 6. Margaret, who married John Berney, Esq., of Reedham, co. Norfold, ancestor of the line of Baronets of this name.

- (17) Henry Wentworth, Esq., of Mountnessing and Gosfield, co. Essex, wo died in his father's lifetime, before 1539. He married in 1528 (the marriage license dated 25 September) Agnes, daughter and heir of Sir Reginald Hammond, Kt., of co. Kent, who survived him and remarried, at Gosfield, 18 January 1545-6, William Wilford, Esq., of London. By her, Henry had issue as follows: -- ________________

- 2. Henry Wentworth, Esq., of Codham Hall, County Essex, the first of the family who settled in that county. He died 22 March, 1482-3, having had two wives. by the 2d, Jane, daughter of Henry Fitz Lewes, who survived him, he had no issue. By his first wife, Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Henry Howard (2d son of Sir John Howard, by Mary, daughter of Sir Henry Hussey, of Co. Sussex, Kt.,) he had, with other issue, Sir Roger Wentworth, of Codham Hall, aforesaid, Sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire in 1499, and died 9 August 1539, who married Anne, only daughter and heir of Humphrey Tyrrell, Esq., of Little Warley, Co. Essex. She died 28 August, 1534, leaving, with other issue, Sir John Wentworth, Kt., of Gosfield, Co. Essex, born 1494, died 15 September, 1567; he married Anne, daughter of John Bettenham, Esq., of Pluckley, Co. Kent, who was buried at Gosfield, Co. Essex, 30 November, 1595. They had two daughters. One of them, Anne, married three times: 1st. Sir Hugh Rich, 2d son of Lord Chancellor Rich, who died 1 November 1554; 2d. Henry Fitzallen, Lord Maltravers, who died in 1556; and 3d. Wm. Deane, Esq. Lady Maltravers was buried in Gosfield Church, 10 January, 1580-1. The other daughter of Sir John and Lady Anne Wentworth, viz., Mary, was married at Gosfield, 9 February, 1545-6, to Sir Thos. Wentworth, Kt., 2d Baron of Nettlestead. She died without issue, and evidently shortly after her marriage. (See forward to number 19 of this note for further account of her husband.)

- Sir Roger Wentworth, of Codham Hall, by his wife Anne Tyrrell (see back to number 2 of XIV. of this note) had a second son, Henry Wentworth, Esq., Mountnessing, Co. Essex, and died in his father's lifetime, leaving by his wife Anne, daughter of Reginald Hammond, Esq. (with other issue), a son, John Wentworth, Esq., born 1540, buried at Gosfield, 3 April, 1588. He inherited Gosfield Hall from his uncle Sir John Wentworth, Kt. (see back to number 2 of XIV. of this note), and by his first wife Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Christopher Heydon, Kt., had with other issue a son, John Wentworth, Esq., born 1564, buried in Gosfield church, 11 February, 1613-4, who married Cecelia, daughter of Sir Edward Unton, by Anne, Countess of Warwick, and had with other issue Sir John Wentworth, Kt., of Gosfield, created a Baronet, 29 June, 1611, and died in October 1631, when, having no surviving male issue, the Baronetcy expired. _______________________

- Notes: De jure 5th Baron Despenser. Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk in 1509 and 1517, was knighted in 1512, served at the battle of Spurs in 1513, was present at the Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520, and died on 17 Oct. 1528. Knighted 1523 with Arthur Poole. He married Anne, daughter of Sir James Tyrrell, the supposed murderer of the Princes in the Tower.
