Annie Shelby Rites Today Funeral services will be held today at 1 P.M. in Finley’s Rose Chapel for Annie Blanche Shelby, 84, Portland native and granddaughter of General Joseph Lane, Oregon’s first territorial governor, who died Sunday at Lovejoy sanitarium after an illness of several months following a paralytic stroke. Miss Shelby, for many years bridge editor of The Oregonian, had been an invalid since suffering a broken leg in an auto accident in 1929. She was born at Southwest Third avenue and Alder street in April, 1855, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Shelby who had accompanied General Lane to Oregon two years earlier as he began his second term as territorial governor. Mr. Shelby was a prominent Portland merchant for many years. Miss Shelby taught in the old Harrison school but later turned to writing books and articles on bridge, including a column the Oregonian. She was a sister of Eugene Shelby, for many years an official with the Wells Fargo company, who died here in October, 1938, and an aunt of Mrs. Frank G. Owen (Leila Shelby) of New York, former society editor of The Oregonian. At Miss Shelby’s request, the final services will be as nearly as possible identical with those of her brother, Eugene. Rev. Oswald W. Taylor of Grace Memorial Episcopal church will officiate. Burial will be at Riverview cemetery. [The Oregonian, 13 Dec 1939, p8]
