About Anthonie Christoffel Steyn

A C Steyn was born in Kroonstad, but was a British subject. When he died in 1965 he was a farmer and an old age pensioner. He had been married in community of property to his wife, whom he had married in Enkeldoorn, Rhodesia in 1916. The death notice drawn up by Antonie Christoffel Steyn the son of the deceased, he omitted Frederick Charl Hefer Steyn . He left a will and left movable property not amounting to more than 2000 pounds, but no immovable property. And yet the last place of residence is given as Cashel, Melsetter District , which sounds like a farm? In the instructions on the form, children from different marriages are meant to be listed separately.

The Steyns on the Henry/Steyn Trek settled on land between Cashel (sometimes referred to as Penkridge where the town was founded)and Melsetter. With time the farms were divided up between the sons and their sons. Eventually Summervale Farm (part of Steyns Bank) was in the possession of Antonie C. Steyn (b 1889), by the late 1940’s the farm was in financial difficulties. His son Fred. offered to pay off the loan from the Land Bank an in return he was to inherit the farm, but living in Salisbury could not visit that often. Stoffel (A. Christoffel b1928) the third son living in Umtali visited regularly and made many improvements to the property to help the old folks, the cost of these improvements were later legally assessed, and Summervale went to Stoffel where he resided with his family until the Rhodesian War took off, the farm had to be abandoned and Stoffel moved to Que Que to work for Sable Chemicals. After the war the farm was cleared by the Military Engineers and was sold to a worker at Sable Chemicals. Fred had planted a small stand of trees that after 25 – 30 years (70’s?) were felled. Many of the farms in the area were taken by the Government for the Forestry Commission and the buildings destroyed but the homestead on Summer vale appears to be still in use [ 19°37'27.00"S 32°49'51.61"E or -19.623889, 32.831111 ] Google Earth copy and paste (C.J.S)
