אנטיגונוס הראשון

Antigonus was one of five sons of John Hyrcanus. During their father reign, he and his eldest brother Judah Aristobulus I cooperated in the war and the conquest of Samaria. After their father's death, Aristobulus came into power, imprisoned his mother, killed her by starvation and executed all his brothers and their family members, except Antigonus, who became his illustrious military commander and served him faithfully. Nevertheless, Aristobulus, whose health was rather poor was very suspicious of his brother's loyalty. He feared that his brother, a young military victorious commander might take his place and thus ordered that he must not visit him armed. He also ordered that anyone who comes to the king Armed will be killed immediately.

The queen who hated Antigonus ordered to inform him that his brother the king invites the victorious hero to present himself to the king in full arms. Antigonus accepted the invitation, and as expected, upon entering the royal palace fully armed, he was killed by the king's guards.

The guilt over his brother's death intensified the king's sickness. It was said that he was coughing blood, bleeding on the same spot where his brother was killed. This omen terrified the king, who eventually died of his sickness and his guilt.

Antigonus's greatest achievement while fighting on behalf of his brother was the occupation and conversion of the Itureans, a northern Arab/Arameic tribe in todays Lebanon area..

אנטיגונוס הראשון (135 לפנה"ס-104 לפנה"ס) - מצביא חשמונאי, בנו של יוחנן הורקנוס.

בחיי אביהם שיתפו פעולה הוא ואחיו, יהודה אריסטובולוס הראשון, במלחמה בצוותא בכיבוש השומרון. משעלה אריסטובולוס לשלטון, הוא הרג את אימו על ידי הרעבתה בבית הסוהר וכלא את כל משפחתו פרט לאנטיגונוס, שהפך למצביא מהולל שלו ושרת אותו בנאמנות. אף על פי כן שמר אריסטובולוס, שבריאותו הייתה מעורערת, על חשדנותו. הוא חשש שמא אחיו איש הצבא הצעיר יתפוס את מקומו ולפיכך הורה שזה לא יבוא אליו מזוין בנשק. בנוסף אף ציווה שכל מי שיבוא למלך חמוש ייהרג לאלתר.

המלכה ששטמה את אנטיגונוס הורתה לספר לו שאחיו רוצה לראות אותו עם כל כלי נשקו, כיאות לגיבור מנצח. כך הוא אכן בא אל אחיו המלך, וכצפוי הרגו אותו השומרים.

האשמה שחש על מות אחיו הגבירה את חוליו של יהודה אריסטובולוס, ואף מסופר שכשהחל לפלוט דם מפיו, נתגלגלו העניינים כך שדם זה נשפך בדיוק היכן שנשפך דם אחיו, מה שהבעיתו מאוד. בסופו של דבר הוא מת מחוליו ומאשמתו.

על דברים אלו כותב יוסף קלוזנר:

   "כל הסיפורים האלו, מתחילתם ועד סופם, חשודים הם בדמיונות והפלגה. יש כאן דברי אגדה יותר מדי. הרי הסיפורים הללו נקראים כרומן היסטורי ממש!"

הישגו הגדול של אנטיגונוס בעת שלחם למען אחיו היה בכיבושם וגיורם של היטורים, שבט ערבי צפוני.
