About Antoine Cordary
GEDCOM Note
Anthony Codori was a French immigrant, but apparently could also speak (or at least write) German. In April 1864, he signed a document to sell property on the South side of West Middle Street in Gettysburg to Ann Maria Taylor in German. He was naturalized while living in Gettysburg on April 22, 1856, suggesting that he had been in the United States at least 5 years. The Gettysburg census suggests that he was here, at the latest, by 1850. Interestingly, Anthony was listed as a native of Germany in the 1850 census, but as a native of France in subsequent censuses. He remained in Gettysburg to the end of his life in the U.S.
Tax records of Gettysburg show that Anthony owned property consisting of a house and lot during the years 1851 through 1858 with a "J. Staub" who, according to the historical society, was undoubtedly a man---women were rarely named as co-owners of property at that time. The Grantee Index (T 167) at the Adams County Historical Society shows that Anthony bought property on West Middle Street from Anna Mary Sell.
Anthony was in the Gettysburg census of 1850, listed as a native of Germany. Anthony also was in the Gettysburg 1857 census, described as a laborer. In the 1860 census he was 65 years old and was living with Magdalene and their son, Jacob, his wife, Anna Barbara, and their two children, Mary C. (age 1) and Margaret E. (4 mos). Anthony was described as the owner of $500 in real estate and $100 in personal property.
St. Francis Xavier Church in Gettysburg (22 West High Street, zipcode 17325, phone 717-334-3919) lists Anthony as having died on February 5, 1866. I spoke with Anna Golden at this church on 9/22/1992. She told me that Anthony and Magdelene were parishioners at St. Francis Xavier and were buried there. She did not know if there were tombstones to mark their graves and did not know in which section they were buried.
On May 14, 1850, aboard the ship, George Evans, Antoine Cordary immigrated with his family, having departed from Le Havre, France. They included Madeleine Cordary (age 54), Marie Cordary (age 20), Jacob Cordary (age 13), Jean Stab (age 28) and his wife Catherine Stab (age 26) who apparently had traveled with an infant who died during the trip. All were born in France. There was also an Antoine Cordary, age 20, whom I believe to be John A. Codori who became a prominent Butcher in Baltimore.
Information from Patti Kehler's web site, about 2001.
