About Archibald Jackson Steel Barnett
Archibald was a missionary Baptist Preacher, an interpreter for the Choctaws, a farmer, and a chimney fireplace maker. He transcribed the new testament into Choctaw for the Indians.
Granddaughter Elizabeth Lusk said "Grandfather didn't think anyone could do no wrong. When outlaws came through, he put them up. Jesse James and the Daltons, he put up many a time. Archibald had a half brother, Joe McGrew. Joe came with the Dalton brothers after they robbed the Itaskah Bank in Oklahoma. When they were making their get-a-way, they ate at the Barnett's house. Joe McGrew was shot up pretty bad. There were quite a few people killed during the robbery."
When A.J.S. and Elizabeth Barnett were given thier Indian land allotment they and $19,000 in gold. It took them three days to move. At night A.J.S. would bury the gold and then dig it up in the morning.
