Arnold Joseph Stone

Arnold Joseph Stone (Stoney), age 86, beloved husband of Phyllis Kathleen Stone, died on Wednesday June 8, 2011 in his sleep at Calvin Community. The funeral will be 11 a.m. on Monday, June 13, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4114 Allison Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50310.

Born in Des Moines, Stoney was the son of the late Sander and Linda Stone. He attended North High School in Des Moines and enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1943, serving during World War II. After returning to Des Moines from service, he met a young nursing student, Phyllis Kathleen Campbell, and they were married in 1949. Arnold and Phyllis moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where he attended barber college and graduated in 1951. He returned to Des Moines and became a successful owner of Stoney's Barber Shop for 48 years from 1954 to 2002.

Stoney joined Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1952 and was an active member for nearly 60 years, serving as a Deacon. He was initiated into the Acanthus Masonic Lodge in Des Moines in 1946 and was a lifelong member.

Survivors in addition to his wife include his children, Suzanne (Donald) Stone Lamb of Austin, Texas, Steven Allen (Michelle) Stone of Des Moines, and John Joseph (Laurie Navin) Stone of Polk City; grandchildren, Scott Lamb, Kristen Lamb, James Stone, Stephanie Stone, Andrew Stone, Audrey Stone, and Evan Stone; eight nieces and nephews; and a sister, June Stone Miller of Kansas City. One of Stoney's greatest loves in life was attending his grandchildren's events and activities. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather and was so proud of all of his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, at Westover Funeral Home, 6227 Hickman Road, Des Moines, IA 50322. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery, 4909 University Avenue. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the family for a memorial at Calvin Community.
