About Arnold Whitridge

Arnold Whitridge, American historian and author, was born in New Rochelle, New York, on June 29, 1891, the son of New York attorney Frederick Wallingford Whitridge and Lucy Arnold Whitridge. A graduate of Yale University (1913), Whitridge was studying at Oxford University at the outbreak of World War I, and enrolled in the British Royal Field Artillery. He returned to New York in 1917 following his father's death; he soon after joined the United States Army and was stationed in France and Germany through the end of the war. Whitridge received an MA from Oxford University in 1914 and PhD from Columbia University in 1925, after which he taught history at Columbia, Yale, and the University of Athens in Greece. He died in Salisbury, Connecticut, on January 29, 1989.

Arnold's wife, Janetta Alexander Whitridge was born on August 23, 1890, the daughter of New York attorney and financier Charles Beatty Alexander and Harriet Crocker Alexander; the Alexanders maintained homes in New York City, Paris, London, San Francisco, Newport, Rhode Island, and Tuxedo Park, New York. Janetta Alexander began working at the Paris branch of the Y.M.C.A. in November 1917, and married Arnold Whitridge in Paris on April 25, 1918. She remained in France through the end of World War I. Janetta Alexander Whitridge was active in many charitable and social organizations in New York, and died there on March 27, 1973.

The collection contains more than five hundred letters written by Janetta Alexander Whitridge to her husband Arnold Whitridge and to her family, primarily her mother Harriet Crocker Alexander. The letters were written from France, mostly from Paris, during World War I, and describe her daily activities, observations of local conditions, and events, as well as news of people known to the recipients. Series I also includes seven letters written by Janetta to to her husband in 1924 while one of them was traveling away from home. Interfiled in Series II are a few letters addressed to Janetta's father Charles Beatty Alexander, and sister Harriet Alexander Aldrich. Several letters to Harriet Crocker Alexander contain letters sent to Janetta from acquaintances that she forwarded to her mother as enclosures.

Gift of Frederick Whitridge and Janetta Whitridge Leake, 2003 and 2005. Boxes 1-3 contain Series I: Letters from Janetta Alexander Whitridge to Arnold Whitridge (1917-1919, 1924); Boxes 4-7 contain Series II: Letters from Janetta Alexander Whitridge to the Alexander Family (1917-1919).
