Death Takes Arthur Asay
Arthur Asay, vineyardist and builder in Lodi since 1920, passed away early Saturday in a local hospital after a lingering illness. Born in Illinois in 1873, Mr. Aday was 80 years of age.
He was the son of Solomon Asay, who moved his family in the late 1880's to the San Luis Valley in Colorado, where government land was available for homesteading. It was there Mr. Asay spent his early manhood and was married to a schoolmate, Emma Glick.
About 1900, the family moved to San Diego, where Mr. Asay established his reputation as builder and contractor. In 1920, they came to Lodi and bought a vineyard, paying at that time a record price of $1,000 per acre.
After the death of his wife in 1943, Mr. Asay married Katherine B. Doe of Stockton and they have since made their home at 19 N. California st.
Mr. Asay was well known not only through his farming and building activities, but also through his church work, having been a member of the Methodist Church since boyhood. During the past 33 years he has served in various capacities in the First Methodist Church of Lodi.
He will be remembered by many friends in this community.
Besides his wife, Katherine, of Lodi, he leaves two sons, Earl and Ralph Esay, both of Stockton; and a granddaughter, Marilyn Asay Dennis, also of Stockton.
He also is survived by two sisters, Margaret Bullard of San Diego; and Lydia Attwood of Raton, N.M.; and two brothers, George Asay of Denver, Colo.; and Harry Asay of Lodi.
