About Arthur William Qualey
SHERMAN – Arthur William Qualey, 92, died peacefully at home early Friday morning, Oct. 24, 2008, after two years of being cared for by his loving wife. He was born March 5, 1916, in Benedicta, the son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Rush) Qualey. He was drafted June 1941 into the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving with the 29th Fighter Squadron as a military policeman and airplane mechanic, stateside. His hopes to become a pilot were not fulfilled due to a vision difficulty. As an aircraft mechanic, Arthur tested one of the first jet engines. Discharged at the rank of staff sergeant, Arthur returned to Benedicta/Sherman area, where he operated a dairy and potato farm, retiring in 1994. In the early 1960s, he had one of the first milking parlors in the area. He is survived by his wife, Rita (Rush), who became his wife, July 2, 1949. They raised nine children, Anna Robinson and her husband, William, of Stacyville, Bridget Qualey and her husband, Richard Stetson, of Camden, Andrea Edwards and her husband, Steven, of Dyer Brook, John Qualey and his wife, Patty, of Sherman, Helen McKinnon and her husband, Andrew, of Bangor, Tom Qualey and Linda McGee of Benedicta, Margaret Qualey and her husband, Peter Drury, of Vinalhaven, Liz Young and her husband, Russell, of Cumberland and Kathleen Bates and her husband, Ron, of Holden; 24 grandchildren, Charity Goller, Amanda Hancock, Abigail Robinson, Emily Qualey, Saphrona Stetson, Andrew and Logan Edwards, Jim Spencer, Jessie, Jason, Joshua and Katie Qualey, Ian, Devon and Regan McKinnon, Meagan McGee, Erin Forsyth, William and Eliza Drury, Hannah and Molly Young, Abraham, Amy and Lucas Bates; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings, George Qualey and Margaret McAvoy; and sister-in-law, Margaret Qualey, all of Benedicta. He was predeceased by his parents; by six sisters, Hazel, Anna and Louise Qualey, Nora Schafer, Catherine St. Peter and Irene McAvoy; and five brothers, Herbert, Harold, Francis, Gilbert and Robert Qualey. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Benedicta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at the church with Father David Raymond presiding. Interment will be at St. Benedict’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Hospice, Visiting Nurses of Aroostook, 106 Main St., A-2, Houlton, ME 04730.
