RAIDAL _Arvo Raidal died in his 82nd year in the Palliative Care Unit at St. Paul's hospital on October 12, 2003. A service of Remembrance will be held Friday, October 17, 2003 at 1:30 PM in the Chapel of the Saskatoon Funeral Home (Corner of 4th Avenue & 25th St.) conducted by Rev. Harley Johnson. Arvo was predeceased by his parents, Elmar and Amalie Raidal, his sister, Valve Klavins and brother-in-law, Arvis, his sister-in-law, Sirje, and in 1987 his beloved wife, Lehte. Arvo was born in Estonia, July 15, 1921. He began his university studies in 1940 in Tartu, Estonia in the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy. His studies were affected by both the Soviet occupation of Estonia 1940-41 and following that, the Nazi occupation which lasted until 1944. In 1943 Arvo went into military service and served on the Russian Front as a soldier in the Estonian Army. After the war, he worked in Germany in ""Displaced Persons"" camps run by the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Association. It was in one of these camps, Camp Hanau, that Arvo met Lehte. He and Lehte eventually immigrated to England and in March 1948 were married in Scotland. They lived in Manchester, England for 10 years where Arvo worked primarily in the area of Psychiatric Nursing. Arvo and Lehte moved to Canada in April 1958 and Arvo continued his career in nursing at the North Battleford Hospital. In 1963 Arvo joined Saskatchewan Social Services as a Social Worker. In 1974 he resumed his interrupted university studies when he entered the faculty of Social Work at the University of Regina. He graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1976 and was awarded the University Prize in Social Work. Arvo taught many times for the Faculty and was highly regarded as a teacher by his students and colleagues. He was a member of the Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers, Editor of the Association's newsletter for three years and in 1980 President of the Association. In 1983 the Association honoured him with its Fifth Annual Distinguished Service Award. Arvo continued to work with the Department of Social Services and retired in 1986 as a Policy Analyst, Income Security Division, Saskatoon. During his long and successful career with the Department, he authored many reports and departmental briefs, which greatly influenced social assistance welfare policy in Saskatchewan. Arvo was always a student of life. He was a poet and a scholar, a teacher, a linguist and a storyteller. He had a wry sense of humor, he loved to write, was an avid reader, he loved the theatre and his cats. Most of all, Arvo loved people. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his many friends. Cremation with interment at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Funeral service arrangements are entrusted to the SASKATOON FUNERAL HOME.
