"Asher Asher arrived in New Zealand in 1843, three years after the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. He became involved in firefighting in Auckland and in 1857 was appointed the first Fire Brigade Superintendent in New Zealand. He and his wife moved to Tauranga in 1874. Seven years after their arrival, a massive fire destroyed the entire northern end of the township in 1881, burning it to the ground. Asher was made an honorary Fire Inspector for the newly formed Tauranga Fire Brigade and in 1897 was congratulated for completing 40 years of service as a Fire Brigade Superintendent."
