- "Norm Gleichman, 58, the deputy general counsel of the Service Employees International Union, died Jan. 11 in a drowning accident in Akumal, Mexico, where he was vacationing with his family.
- "A family friend, Barry Toiv, said Mr. Gleichman died while snorkeling. An autopsy determined that the death was caused by drowning, Toiv said.
- "Mr. Gleichman joined the union’s legal staff in 2002. His work included oversight of all legal matters relating to administration, budget, finance, internal governance, compliance with Labor Department requirements and relationships with other labor organizations.
- "Norman Michael Gleichman was born in North Hollywood, Calif. He graduated from the University of California at Irvine in 1976 and from Stanford University Law School in 1979.
- "He came to Washington in 1980 and lived in Takoma Park. For eight years before joining the union’s legal staff, he was a legal counsel with the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission.
- "Earlier, he did legal work for the Communications Workers of America, and practiced with the firms of Barr, Peer & Camens and Cafferky, Powers, Jordan & Lewis.
- "In his free time, Mr. Gleichman was an actor in community theater productions. He had been slated to play the lead role in February in “Moon Over Buffalo” at the Bowie Playhouse. He appeared in various Shakespeare plays and as Antonio Salieri in “Amadeus.”
- "He was a volunteer reading teacher for the Literacy Council of Montgomery County and was a Montgomery County election judge.
- "Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Marie Ritzo of Takoma Park; two children, Eve Gleichman of Philadelphia and Nicholas Gleichman of Boston; and his mother, Elinore Glenn of Northridge, Calif."
