Biography

Henry Mo(o)recock, weaver of Smarden married "Aphra" (per transcription) Cork on 4 Jun 1616 at St. Margaret's, Canterbury, Kent.[1] They had at 2 children baptized at Smarden and apparently at least 2 more as described in their emigration record below.

Children - Morecock

  1. Katherine bap 14 Oct 1615 at Smarden[2] buried 15 Oct 1615 at Smarden.[3] Given her baptism eight months before the marriage of Henry Moorcock to Aphra Cork, she may have been a daughter of Henry by an earlier marriage.
  2. Elizabeth buried 7 Apr 1617 at Smarden; a baptism record not yet found but was buried as daughter of Henry so seems very likely to be a child of this couple[4]
  3. Bennett Moorecock bap 23 Aug 1618 Smarden[5]
  4. Nicholas bap 22 Apr 1621 Smarden[6]
  5. "Marie Morcoke" bap 2 Sep 1623 Smarden[7]

Henry Morecocke was buried 23 May 1625 in Smarden, Kent, England.[8]

His widow married Thomas Whitten (spellings vary) at St. Mary Magdalen, Canterbury on 5 Oct 1625.[9]

Children - Whitten

  1. Jeremiah Whitton bp Smarden, Kent 6 Aug 1626
  2. George Whitton bp. Smarden, 18 Jan 1628/9; bur. there 14 Feb 1628/9

Thomas (36) is listed on the Elizabeth and Anne along with Awdry (45) and Jeremy (probably James at 8 years of age). "Awdry disappears from the records and probably died shortly after arrival."[9]

She died by 22 Nov. 1639, when Thomas remarried in Plymouth Colony, New England.

Age 34 in 1625, age 45 in 1635 so born c. 1590/1591. died after immigration in 1635.

4 Jun 1616 Henry Moorecocke of Smarden, broadweaver, and Aphra (Audria) Cork of Egerton to be married at St. Margarets Canterbury. Cowper, Joseph Meadows. Canterbury marriage licences; v. 01 p. 292

The original parish registers for St. Mary Magdalene, Canterbury, Kent, no longer exist. The Bishop's and Archdeacons transcripts list this marriage as 1 Oct 1625. Oddly the marriage license was date 5 October 1625 "Quinto die Octobris 1625, which day Thomas Whitton of the parish of Smarden in the diocese of Canterbury broadweaver a bachelor of the age of 25 years or thereabouts and at his own government and allegeth that he intendeth to marry Adrean Moorecock of the same parish widow of the age of 34 years or thereabouts the relict of Henry Moorecock late of the parish aforesaid deceased ... & desireth license to be married in the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene in Canterbury" Thomas (36) is listed on the
