The sixth child of Lydia and George was named August after his father’s brother who was also the child’s godfather. As a young man, August worked on his father’s farm at Woodside, South Australia and then at Bow Hill on the River Murray. There is a record in theLand Titles Office stating that August and his brothers, Charlie, Bert, and Fred took up a grant of land at Geranium in 1909, of 532 acres for 131 pounds. Although his father and brothers farmed at Geranium, it is doubtful that Augustjoined them, as in 1910, he married Violet Rose Evans, whose father had previously employed August on his property at Purnong, upstream from Mannum. August and Violet were married in the Roman Catholic Church at Blumberg (now known as Birdwood). They lived at Karoonda, east of Mannum for many years. Their three daughters were born at Mannum and their youngest child, Kevin, was born in Adelaide. On leaving Karoonda, August and Violet lived at Mile End, an inner suburb of Adelaide. When Violet died in 1960, August moved to nearby Kilburn to live with his daughter, Sheila, who was a great support for her father until he died in 1972 aged 89. Both Violet and August are buried in Centennial Park Cemetery. Some family members have recollections of learning that in his younger days August was quite proficient at boxing.
