About Augustus Jones
According to Margaret Palmquist Ransom's friend, Jean Hastings, a native Canadian, Upper Canada (colloquially known as Canada West) was settled by the English and Scottish and was a British possession by 1763. In the 1867 confederation, Upper Canada became Ontario. "Loyalists" (fleeing from the American colonists who wanted freedom from the British) settled here, primarily along the shore of Lake Ontario. Except for Augustus who went to Illinois and his sister Adelaide who went to Spokane, Augustus’ siblings went to California, according to Cindy Jones Christenson.
