Aukje Kranenburg

KRANENBURG, Aukje (b. Groningen 27-8-1822 -. Gest Groningen 13-3-1901), bookshop. Daughter of Hindrik Kranenburg (1795-1884), merchant, and Albertien Klein (1802-1880). Aukje Kranenburg married on 11-7-1845 in Groningen Joannes Römelingh (1820-1892), bookseller. From this marriage were born eight children, of whom three young deceased.

Aukje Kranenburg grew up as the eldest daughter in a Dutch Reformed family of seven children in Groningen. At the age of 22 she married Joannes Römelingh, son of the bookseller and publisher John Römelingh (1781-1857) - from 1827 located on the Grote Markt - and for many years president of the booksellers Collegie in Groningen. Aukje and Joannes started in 1845 a book and paper trade in Lord Street, corner Hoogstraatje. She also had a publishing company mainly dissertations and religious works.

Aukje Römeling-Kranenburg had eight children, five of whom reached adulthood. Three of them came in the bookstore of her and her husband to work, John (1847-1887), Albertine (1849-1889) and Geertruida Römelingh (1850-1944). Only the latter was so alive when Römelingh Joannes died on May 18, 1892. If widow continued Aukje Römelingh with her daughter in the store Heerestraat forth. It was common for widows, with one or more children, the company of their spouse continued. Particularly was that Aukje Römelingh in 1895 Imke Toens (1853-1929), a woman from Delft who did not belong to the family, took the leadership of the company. Mother and daughter Römelingh introduced her in the newspaper for the Bookstore March 26, 1895, and praised the "training they have received."

Aukje Römelingh-Kranenburg was seventy passed in 1895 when she took leave of the bookstore in the Lord Street. She died in 1901 and was buried in the family grave at the Southern Cemetery in Groningen, where her husband was buried.
