About BORUKH

GEDCOM Note

"Barnett Levy" is listed as the father on the death certificate of his daughter, Yetta/Eva Levy. However, documents for two of his children list "Goldman" as his surname - while another document lists his surname as "Goldberg." (See discussion under Chava Goldberg.)

Moreover, he is listed as Borukh Krupnin in the 1816 Veliuona Revision List

May 10, 1840: "Has a house, 1 adult male in family, taxes = 5 rubles" (May 1840 Veliuona Taxpayers' List)

1852: "5 females in family" (his wife and their 4 daughters).

July 23, 1863: Baruch was issued a Passport Certificate which was valid for one year. (He was listed as being 69 years old.) [1863 Kaunas Uyezd Passport Issuance Records, part 2]. On July 1, 1864, just a few weeks before his certificate expired, he was issued a new one-year Internal Passport Certificate. (This time he was listed as being 71 years old.) [1864 Kaunas Uyezd Passport Issurance Records, part 2-1] On July 8, 1865, he was again issued a one-year Internal Passport Certificate (listed as being 72 years old)[1865 Kaunas Uyezd Passport Issurance Records, part 2].

NOTE: Prior to World War I in the Russian Empire, individuals were required to have an internal passport in order to travel within the boundaries of Russia. These internal passports were issued by local municipalities, town dwellers administration, or the police. They were of different categories and colors - some were valid to travel only within the guberniya, others "within the Pale of Settlement and to the towns of the Russian Empire where Jews were permitted to reside", etc. The terms of these passports also varied - half a year, a year, two years. Not only Jews, but all the categories of population, including even nobility, needed internal passports for traveling, and these also might have been different.

NOTE: In 1845, the former kahal of the Jewish community of Veliuona was merged by the government of the Kaunas gubernia into the community of Seredezius for the purpose of box and candle taxes. Thus, although Borukh was listed as living in Seredzius in the 1846 Candle Taxpayers List, he was probably still living in Veliuona.
