John Stuart known as Bailie John Stuart was born 2 September 1676 in Inverness, Inverness-shire, Scotland. He was the son of Alexander Steuart (1644–1720) and his wife Beatrix Muchet (1650–1697).[1]

He was baptised on 13 September 1676 in Inverness, Inverness-shire, Scotland.[2]

He was a merchant in Inverness and a full account of his life is given in the Letter-Book of Bailie John Steuart of Inverness 1715-1752[1]

Most records give his name spelt Stuart but he signed his name Steuart.

Marriage

Bailie John Stuart was married, first, to Marion Rose the daughter of Bailie Robert Rose of Merkinch, Inverness, of the family of Kilravock. She died early in life.[1]

He was then married to Ann Macleod the daughter of Norman Macleod of Drynoch in Skye.[1]
