Obituary: Peninsula Daily News via Legacy.com: Barbara J. Fanger, 1935 – 2018
Former Port Angeles resident Barbara Joy Fanger (Hunt), 83, quietly passed away October 15, 2018, with her daughters at her bedside.
She was born in Seattle on May 3, 1935, to Norwegian immigrants, Ole and Agnes (Olsen) Jostol. Barbara attended Broadview Elementary and was a proud 1952 graduate of Lincoln High School.
Barbara studied piano and loved to listen to classical music and watch Hollywood musicals. Her favorite movie was "A Song to Remember" starring her girlhood crush, Cornel Wilde.
After high school, Barbara worked for Bank of America in Washington, D.C., and Alcoa in Seattle. After a tour of Europe and trip to visit relatives in Norway, Barbara married Milton Hunt in February 1960.
In 1967, they and their two daughters, Paula and Julia, moved to Port Angeles. Barbara was active with the Clallam County League of Women Voters and chaired several voter registration drives. She was also an Educational Aid with the Port Angeles School District and taught many children to read and write.
She was way ahead of Martha Stewart when it came to cooking, baking, and canning, and patiently taught these skills to her daughters. Her Norwegian sweets – lefse, krumkake, fyrstekake, and fruit cake – were enjoyed by friends and family during the holidays. She was a talented seamstress, making a trousseau, curtains and household linens, school clothes, holiday outfits, and Halloween costumes for her daughters, and attire for their Barbie dolls.
In the mid-70s, Barbara earned her AA degree at Peninsula College and was soon employed by the college in the administration office where she was the first to learn and use the state's new computer system.
After Barbara and Milton went their separate ways in 1988, she moved to the Seattle area to work at Shoreline Community College. Frank Fanger, whom Barbara knew when she was single, discovered she was in town and was determined to not let her slip away again.
Frank and Barbara were married November 4, 1989. They shared nearly 30 years of traveling, cooking, antiquing, the Sunday crossword, and gardening together. Their devotion to and love for each other was apparent to everyone who knew them. Frank left us October 10, five days before Barbara followed him to their next adventure together.
Barbara is survived by her daughter Paula; daughter, Julia Hunt (Ron) Christoffel; brother, Ron Jostol and family; many Hunt family members in Portland, Oregon; and Olsen relatives in Norway.
Barbara will be greatly missed at the Loyal Lincoln Ladies luncheons, and meetings of The Nines book club, of which she was a 19-year member. She often said that she was lucky to have so many longtime friends and her family is grateful to the many people whose kindness and loyalty gave her years of happiness and support.
Barbara and Frank will remain together at Restlawn Memorial Park in Edmonds, with arrangements provided by Beck's Tribute Center. Memorials in Barbara's name may be offered to the Nordic Heritage Museum, in Seattle, or to your favorite cat sanctuary or shelter.
