About Bartholomew Mears, Sr

Came from England 1655 in an indenture agreement with William Taylor

Bartholomew was born circa 1641. He married Mary Huges circa 1664. He married before 4 Oct 1668 as the deed he gave to William Taylor on that date was cosigned by his wife, Mary Mears. Bartholomew appears on the list of tithables at Accomack Co, VA, for in 1668. His name was on the Tithable list in 1668 with two tithables and by 1675 had increased to five tithables. After his death in 1682 the name of "widow Mears" was on the list through the year 1691. He made a will on 16 December 1682 at Accomack Co, VA. To godson John Rogers. To Samuel, the son of William Williams. To eldest son Bartholomew Mears plantation where I now live on the South side of the branch and all house and appurtenances thereunto belonging ... his said part of my said plantation lying upon three hundred acres upon the eastmost side of Beaver Dam Branch; privilege of timber on plantation on East side of Beaver Dam Branch. To son John all the land from the Small Branch Southerly to Richard Kellam's line. To son Richard land from that Little Branch Northwest. To sons Robert & William plantation at Occahannock, Robert to have 200 acres & William the remainder. Bartholomew Jr. was also given my great gun and Robert and William my other two guns. Wife Mary Exec. Daughter Elizabeth, wife of George Freshwater, an equal part in all cattle, horses, mares and sheep. Personal estate to remain as it is until my children come to age. William Nock & William Burton overseers. Sons to be at age at 18 & daughters at 16. Witt: John Washbourne, Susanna Washbourne, John Willis, Sr.
