About Bartolomé de Montoya

Bartolome de Montoya born 1572 at Cantillana, a Castillian town near Sevilla died 1609 at Santa Fe, New Mexico, New Spain

Married:

  1. dona Maria de Zamora y Abarca in Mexico City.

This couple came with his entire family to New Mexico, 3 sons and 2 daughters, in 1600. From this family the Montoya surname was established in New Mexico.

Bartolome was the son of Francisco de Montoya.

His wife, Maria de Zamora, was born in Mexico City at San Sebastian, the daughter of Pedro de Zamora who was a resident of that city and former Alcalde Mayor of Oaxaca {Mexico}. Her mother's name was Agustina Abarca. ["Archivos General de la Nacion, Mexico: 1. Inquisicion - {Photo copies in the Coronado Library at the University of New Mexico. Some "Inquisicion" references by page, instead of foja, are transcript copies owned by Dean Scholes, to be also found in the Library of Congress and Ayer Collection}, t. 462, f. 351].

Maria had married Montoya at Texcoco, [ibid.] and by the time they joined Onate's colony they had three boys and two girls, who were all under sixteen in 1600:

  1. Francisco
  2. Diego
  3. Jose
  4. Lucia
  5. Pertronila.

["Don Juan de Onate and the Founding of New Mexico" by George P. Hammond, Santa Fe, 1927].

He is described as being short of stature and wearing a black beard.

Bartolome was an Alferez in 1609 when he escorted a band of friars from Zacatecas to Santa Fe. ["Archivo General de Indias, Sevilla: 5. Contaduria; {transcript copies loaned to Fray Angelico Chavez by Dean France V. Scholes}, leg. 711, Data]. This is the last we hear of him.
