The Publicist. (Chandler, Okla. Terr.), Friday, February 23, 1900 Obituary.
Barton R. Bryan, the aged father of Mrs. Peter Dickinson, died Friday, February 16, after long suffering from Bright’s disease, tho he had been confined to his bed but a few weeks. Mr. Bryan and his wife came here last August to spend their remaining days with their daughter and her family. Altho past 80 years of age, Mr. Bryan still took a lively interest in public affairs and liked to talk upon current questions which he did with remarkable clearness for one of his years, so he rapidly became acquainted with the progressive people with whom he was thrown in contact, and he had already endeared himself to quite a circle of friends in Chandler who learned with sincere regret of his death.
Funeral services were conducted from the Christian church east of town by Rev. C. Brundage Sunday morning at 11 o’clock, and the remains were laid to rest beside two of his grand children.
Barton R. Bryan was born in Bourbon county, Kentucky, October 23, 1819, and died at Chandler February 16, 1900, having thus passed his eightieth birthday. While he was quite young his parents moved to Indiana where he lived until the time of his marriage to Miss Mary Crosse, November 13, 1840. They settled in Missouri where they lived for more than thirty years, and here their children were born, nine in number. Two sons and three daughters and the aged wife survive the husband and father. He left forty living grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
When the civil war began Mr. Bryan was one of the first to enlist and he served with distinction throughout the war. HE was a captain in the Missouri Home Guards for four years.
In 1877 he moved to Arkansas and two years later to Kansas where he lived till he came to Chandler.
Mr. Bryan had amassed a fair amount of this world’s goods which he was ready to share with the unfortunate. Upright in character, fearless in his opinions and a devoted husband and father, he was no less honored by the community than he was venerated by his family.
The tenderest sympathy of all is with the family and especially the feeble wife who in her illness is left without the supporting love upon which she had leaned for sixty years.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Sep 27 2022, 18:19:10 UTC
