About Bathsheba Amonette

Information from Amonett Family: John Amonett who married Bathsheba Rodgers, the father of Ann C Amonett and Ann was the mother of Sarah Ann Kelly Daniels Adams--John Amonett, who was Sarah Ann Kelly's Grandfather. Reuben and John (who md Bathsheba Rodgers) were first cousins. I posted this under John Amonett from my family's research which I am lucky to be in possession of: "John Amonett lived in Buckingham County, Virginia but enlisted in the county of Amherst, Virginia as a private during the Revolutionary War. He enlisted in the summer of 1776 and served until 1 December 1779. He served in Captain Franklin's 10th Virginia Regiment. After the war, he returned to Virginia, but in about 1791, he removed to Knox County in East Tennessee where he lived on the French Broad River. In Tennessee, he married Bathsheba Rogers, it is believed and some of his children were born there. In 1810, he removed his family to Madison County, Alabama. (Early Land Grants in Madison County, Alabama, page 8).

He applied for his pension on 19 October 1832 in Madison County, Alabama and appeared personally before the judge of the county court and said he was 79 years old, which placed his birth in 1753. On 21 July 1835, after her husband's death, Bathsheba Rogers appeared before the court to file for her widow's pension--declaring she was the widow of John Amonett and that they had lived in Madison County, Alabama for about 22 or 23 years before his death on 30 March 1833. (Source: Pension Files)

In John Amonett's will he left his estate to his wife Bathsheba and to his 3 daughters and one son, Elijah Source: Copy of will). One daughter was deceased by the time the will was written so they had 5 children in total. They are not in any particular birth order

(1)Daughter Lucy died at about 17 or 18 years old.

(2)Daughter Martha married Nathan Smith in Madison County, AL on 13 February 1813.

(3)Daughter Ann

(4)Daughter Charlotte

(5)Son Elijah

These are the only children mentioned in his will. His 3 daughters were married at the time of his will was written but his son was not.

After her husband's death, Bathsheba Rodgers left Madison County Alabama with her daughter Ann and (Ann's) husband and her son Elijah. They settled in Shelby County, Tennessee, near Memphis. Elijah Amonett and his wife, along with his widowed sister Ann Amonett Kelley left Memphis in 1849 and went to Ouachita City, in North Louisiana, Union Parish. Yellow Fever ravished the region and Elijah took ill the day they arrived at Ouachita Landing and his wife passed away the next day.
