Obituary: "Ben A. Lamb Dead at Port Byron; Operated Ferry" Port Byron, IL, April 1 (1926) (Special) Ben A. Lamb, 66 years of age, who, for 19 years operated the ferry between Port Byron and LeClaire, died at his home here Tuesday night. Her had been a resident of Port Byron since he was 9 years of age.
"Mr.Lamb was born in Lincolnville Center, Maine, March 2, 1860, the son of Mr. and Mrs Lorenzo Lamb. He was married here to Miss Nellie Sheppard. He conducted a grocery store, meat market and dry goods store here for many years. "One son Carl [Carroll] preceded him in death in 1913. Surviving are his widow and two children, Mrs Walter Brandt of Omaha and Clarence Lamb of Port Byron, and four sisters Mrs William Bawden of Burns, WT, Mrs Henry Fawver of WY, Mrs Peter Johnson of Hillsdale and Mrs Morris O'Connell of Rock Island. "Mr. Lamb was a member of the Masons for many years. At the time of his death he was a member of the village board. "Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2p.m. from the home. Rev. D.C. Ellinwood, pastor of the Methodist Church, will officiate. The Masons will have charge of the services. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery." He died at age 66 years and 28 days old.
He ran a meat business at the peak of Mississippi traffic. He built and ran the barge/ferry "Dolphin" in 1908 to carry freight across the river. It was faster than the rail so it became popular with passengers. He ran it until he died in 1926. William Smith bought the Dolphin from his widow and carried on until Interurban stopped in 1930s Although local residents tried to bring the railroads to Port Byron in the 1850s, the Mississippi River connected the village to the region well into the 20th century. From 1908 to 1925, Martin and Ben Lamb operated a ferry, the Dolphin between Port Byron and Le Claire. When the river was frozen, during the winter months, folks in both towns used what they called "the ice bridge.
