About Benjamin F. Holman
Benjamin Franklin Holman served in the Civil War as first lieutenant of Company F, One Hundred and Seventeenth Ohio Volunteer Infantry
(from July 1863 on, by special order of the War Department, known as the First Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery), from 22 June 1862 until Mar.
1864, when he was promoted to the rank of captain and placed in command of Company D of the same regiment. This position he held until
about 10 Aug. 1865, although he was mustered out at Knoxville, Tenn., 25 July 1865, the regiment proceeding north by rail and water to Camp
Dennison, near Cincinnati, Ohio, where it was paid off and disbanded. He was offered the position of captain of Infantry in the Regular Army,
but declined it and took up the practice of law in Clay County and adjoining counties in Kentucky, following this profession for many years,
until impaired health made his retirement necessary.
