About Benjamin Grigsby, Jr.

A Benjamin Grigsby with wife Mary bought land in 1769 in Augusta Co. VA and sold it in 1770. In Shenandoah Co. VA in 1872-1874 Benjamin Grigsby was in court to answer a suit by Evin Price. In 1795 Benjamin and Mary Price Grigsby buy 56 acres of land in Shenandoah Co.VA. which they sell Dec. 16, 1801 to John and Phebe McGowan. Benjamin Grigsby's wife was Mary Price daughter of John Price Sr. and sister of John Price, Jr. Her brother-in -lawwas bondsman for the marriage of Amelia (Milly) Clifton to Jesse Grigsby in Shenandoah Co. VA in 1802. Two of Benjamon and Mary Grigsby's daughters marry in Shenandoah Co. VA in the decade prior to 1800. Benjamin and Mary sold their property around 1800. The same property is purchased by Jesse and Amelia Grigsby c. 1815 and Jesse Grigsby dies there in 1836. Benjamin Grigsby is found in Shenandoah Co. VA in 1783 on the tax list (also 1787-1788-1790-1791-1792-1795-1796-1797-1798-1799-1800-1803-1804). After 1804 I have no record of Benjamin and Mary Grigsby. In 1798-1799-1803-1804 Jesse Grigsby in on the Shenandoah Co. VA tax list with Benjamin Grigsby as well as being married there in 1802 with Benjamin's wife Mary's brother-in-law as bondsman. It seems probable that Jesse was Benjamin's son who came of tax age in 1798 is found with his father until his father sells the family property prior to His son's marriage in 1802. Benjamin and Mary Grigsby leave Shenandoah Co. VA after 1804. On Feb 24, 1815 Jesse and Amelia Grigsby are able to repurchase Benjamin Grigsby's property from the widdow Phebe McGowan the 56 acres sold to the McGowans by Benjamin and Mary Grigsby and live there the rest of Jesse's life. Jesse and Amelia Grigsby named ther first born son Benjamin Grigsby. After Jesse Grigsby's death in 1836 the estate is settled in 1838 and most of the family moves to Adams County Illinois (some in a few years to Pike Co. Illinois. Some members of the family are still in each of those locations. Jesse Grigsby had a son Jesse Jr. who seems to have died between 1830 and his father's death in 1836. In addition to this Jesse Grigsby, Sr. and wife Amelia Clifton Grigsby with Jesse Grigsby. Jr., another another (Rev.) Jesse Grigsby Sr. with wife Elizabeth Northern Grigsby and son Jesse Grigsby, Jr. move to Shenandoah Co. VA c. 1800 and stay until they move to KY in 1820. For 20 years there are four (4) Jesse Grigsbys living in Shenandoah Co VA. The Rev. Jesse Grigsby, Sr. is from Frederick Co and probably the son of William Grigsby while the second Jesse Grigsby, Sr. is probably the son of Benjamin Grigsby and Mary Price Grigsby. Their daughter Mary Grigsby in 1795 married her cousin Edmond Price in Shenandoah Co. VA. Perhaps descendants of Edmond and Mary Grigsby Price can shed light on the relationship within the Grigsby family! The other Benjamin Grigsby in the early family was born in 1749 the son of Richard Grigsby son of William Grigsby son of Immigrant John Grigsby. This Benjamin Grigsby was a private in Capt Peyton's Company in the Revolution. He recieved pension S1208. Benjamin Grigsby was born April 24, 1749 in Prince William Co. VA. He waws on the tax list in Prince Wm. Co. VA in 1787-1788-1789. He moved to Bourbon Co. KY in 1808, then Clark, Montgomery, and Shelby Counties. Benjamin Grigsby married (! Elizabeth Dunkin and (2) Alcey (Alice) Grigsby Linsey Browning, daughter of Moses Grigsby and Katherine Branson as well as widow of James Lindsey and Caleb Browning before marriage to Benjamin Grigsby. Therefore she is Alice Grigsby Lindsey Browning Grigsby. Her children were Elizabeth Lindsey, Henry Browning among several Browning children, and James Brant Grigsby,Benjamin R. Grigsby, and Elizabeth Grigsby.

With the exception of this Benjamin Grigsby born in 1749 from the John-William-Richard-Benjamin Grigsby line, the name Benjamin Grigsby is found in the probable line of Benjamin Grigsby born c. 1700 who is most likely of the John Grigsby I-John Grigsby II- Benjamin Grigsby line.

The Anne Foley who married Benjamin Grigsby in 1727 could have been the daughter of Thomas Foley and his wife who was a Brandt --- or could have been a widow of Richard Foley who was their son who died in 1726, if her name was Anne --- or could have been a grand-daughter Ann of one of their sons or even a great grand-daughter of Thomas Foley named Anne Foley. At this point I do not know the answer to the question. The children of William Grigsby son of Immigrant John are Richard, John, Margaret, Ann, Alice, and Lattice Grigsby. The John Grigsby and Benjamin Grigsby who are listed as colonial militia in the 1850's in Frederick Co. VA are in all likehood brothers. John is found on the Federick County tax list of James Woods for Winchester, VA. in 1757. Benjamin was fined for missing muster of Capt. Wm. Bethel's Co. on Sept. 13, 1755.

As to the Grigsby DNA study, my Y-DNA 67 results were only one mutation from the mean of all study subjects which translates to only one site mutation from what would have bee that of Immigrant John Grigsby --- an absolute descent from Immigrant John Grigsby.Since my one mutation id not shared with anyone else in the Grigsby family that has been tested, it would indicate that the mutation is one that has occurred since my line has diverged from the others in the family (that would be in the six generations from Jesse Grigsby to me ---Jesse-Strother-Elmer-Paul George-Don Grigsby. Of the closest other Grigsby subject's lines, one of John I - John II- Moses - Henry is a close match with only one mutation difference.
