About Benjamin Shaub Martin

Residing one and a half miles southeast of Columbia, in Manor township, Lancaster Co., PA, was born in West Lampeter township.

He attended the public schools, and worked on the home farm in Lampeter township until fifteen years of age, when his parents died, and he had recourse to any kind of labor that would net him an honest dollar. He made his home, meanwhile, with a brother until his marriage, when he rented a farm near Landis mill and two years later, removed to the old Dambach farm in the northwestern part of the township. This farm comprises 99 acres, devoted to general farming, market gardening and dairying.

Member of the Mennonite Church, and a Republican. Mr. Martin is one of the broad-minded and progressive men who give vitality and vigor to the community in which they live, and is ever ready to assist with his influence and means every measure designed to promote the public welfare.

Interestingly, it is through Benjamin S. Martin that we are related to Hans Herr's son, Emmanuel. Doubly interesting, is that Benjamin S. Martin's wife, Elizabeth Herr Dambach, is our connection to Hans Herr's other son, Abraham. This couple are related to sons of Hans Herr...making John Melvin Thomas, our grandfather, twice connected to Hans Herr, through his mother's parents.

Married Elizabeth H. Dambach on November 11, 1884. The union was "crowned" with six children, five of whom survived.
