Beresford Jobling "Beres" (1956 – 2012)

Brief overview:

Beresford (56), Chairman of the Hartbeespoort Environment and Heritage Association (HEHA), was overpowered by five youths between the ages of 17 and 19 while he was watching television on Friday 31st August 2012. He was hit across his legs with an iron pipe and then strangled to death with a rope. The perpetrators then put Beres's body in his Toyota Hilux, and dumped his body in a rivulet along the Hekpoort Road. The driver then rolled the vehicle, seriously injuring two of the perpetrators, who were taken to hospital, the other three fled. People passing discovered his body the following day, and contacted the police.

    • Two of the perpetrators, were injured after rolling the stolen vehicle, and were taken to hospital, the other three fled. By Sunday afternoon, the police had arrested the other three suspects.

    • As two suspects were still in hospital, only three of the suspects appeared at the Brits Magistrate’s Court. The police opposed bail, the case was postponed until 11 September.
    • Judge Tshifiwa Maumela convicted Ernest Mashudu Nevhulamba, of the Bokfontein squatter camp near Brits
    • Tshepang Mosito's trial was separated from that of Nevhulamba. He will go on trial along with Tshego Mosito and David Thebereng - who denied guilt - in May 2015.

Additional Biographical Information:

Jobling was a descendant of the Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius and still lived on a portion of the original Pretorius farm.

He was a noted historian and was the chairman of the Hartbeespoort Environment and Heritage Association.

At Skeerpoort on Dodona, a portion of Grootplaats (the original farm which was a full 76 800 hectares in extent), lived Beres Jobling, grandson of the remarkable Vida Beynon, first matron of what was then the Meerhof School for the Crippled. Beres (who was christened Charles Beresford Pretorius Jobling) said his grandmother always said he spoke Afrikaans with an Oxford accent.
