Bernard Franklin Steel, Sr. was the son of Abner Lowry and his second wife, Rosie Bell. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He married Lillie Mae Strickland on Jul., 21, 1934. Their marriage produced three sons and two daughters.
- **NOTE: In 1932 and 1949, he received degrees from what is presently known as the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. In July 2007, the Heritage Walk was dedicated to serve as a permanent monument to all of the university's graduates from 1905 to 1954. Bernard, Sr. was honored by having his name engraved on two bricks in the Heritage Walk walkway in front of Old Main, the oldest building on the campus.
